Throw in a few instruments, especially the french horn, and a fight for first chair. Then add a little boy drama and some hard classes and you've got the life of just about every tween girl you know. The characters are in 7th grade, but it a series for younger girls.
...moreI actually dreaded reading this book because of the title. I think I Heart Band is going to turn off kids who would actually enjoy this one. It is a completely realistic look at what happens when a new friend is introduced into the mix, when you start thinking about boys as more than friends, when you move up in school and the classes are so much harder. I remember a lot of these emotions and situations Holly experiences from my own experiences in middle school. You cringe a bit but can also laugh because you survived. However, as much as I would have enjoyed this story as a kid I would probably have never picked it up because of the title. I wasn't in band and would have been completely turned off by the fact that it is mentioned in the title. I would have thought it was all about band instead of a decent story about surviving middle school.

I did an interview with the author HERE!For a long, long time, probably ever since I was in band years and years ago, I have wanted to read a book about band. About kids who eat, drink, and breathe band. Michelle Schusterman has written the book I so badly wanted to read.
Holly Meade is a wonderfully relatable main character. A perfectionist, she clashes with her BFF's new BFF, is completely embarrassed by how difficult she finds 7th grade science, and has a crush on (of COURSE) a cute, trumpet-playing 8th-grader.
I loved every character, I loved every scene. It brought back all the best memories of band, memories of messing up solos, emptying spit valves, and crushing on a cute trumpet player. (Yes, I fell into that trap as well.) Oh, but can I just say, that even though I loved all the characters, I love OWEN just a tiny bit more than everyone else? Owen, who plays French horn, video games, and a clever expy of Magic: The Gathering.
I am SO looking forward to buying every book in this series and reliving my band glory days all over again!

This one time, in band camp… Holly's best friend came home with a new BFF and, man, does she push every one of a jealous Holly's buttons. Except is Natasha really so annoying? Or is it more that Holly is oblivious to the fact that some of the "flaws" Natasha has are the very same traits Holly herself exhibits?I love, love, loved the fun voice in this story- Holly brought me right back to seventh grade and the pains of constantly shifting friendship "alliances". My writer brain completely appreciates what a masterful job Michelle did in keeping Holly likable and relatable when Holly's character traits could send her very much in the other direction. That's SO HARD TO DO! I loved Holly's journey to self-awareness and can't wait for more in this series.
I was never a band geek myself (although take away the "band" from that statement…) but I Heart Band makes me wonder if I missed out!!

Holly Mead's first day of seventh grade isn't going as planned. Her troll of a brother(her words not mine) ruins her outfit, she's nearly late, and her new band director has some surprisingly strict rules. And worst of all, it seems like her best friend, Julia, has replaced Holly with Natasha, the new French horn player.Holly is a perfectionist and very competitive. So she gets really mad when her best friend starts hanging out with Natasha. Her life's getting really stressed out with chair tests, science tests, and best friend troubles. It was great. For some, reason Owen is my favorite character. Then Holly and than Gabby, and than Julia, and lastly Natasha. And i don't think Owen's a nerd and I wish I could draw. And Holly should listen to her friends and mom more often.

7th grader Holly has been practicing her French Horn all summer to be ready for 8th grade advanced band class. But her best friend Julia went to band camp this summer and has made a new friend, Natasha, who also plays the French Horn. It's not enough that she's stolen her friend, but now Natasha is first chair. What promised to be an exciting year is turning out terribly and its all Natasha's fault. This new series is full of teen drama, but is a great clean teen read. The author is apparently a band geek, it shows and is appreciated. The first in a series (so far there are 4) available in paperback only, this would also make a fun stocking stuffer or birthday gift.

I would say that this book is mostly for girls who like reading about true friendship, middle school problems, and girls that just get in the way.

An adorable MG novel that zapped me right back to middle school angst, insecurity, friendship, foes, and forgiveness all set under the umbrella of the band room. I particularly loved Holly and her mom's relationship and her growing friendship with gamer/band geek Owen. Because Batman backpacks ARE cool.Buy this for the early tween in your life!
